So, it’s the second day in this place.  I’ve got power now, and now that I have power, I have placed a few things into my refrigerator.  Funny story, apparently it was in fact connected, but there was a switch in the building that hadn’t been activated, so the power just wasn’t getting to my unit.

While the maintenance personnel worked on that problem I worked in the apartment, taking a bottle of Arm & Hammer Essentials to the refrigerator.  It’s a unit supplied with the apartment, and though it was fairly new it had an odd smell.  A white glove test revealed some strange sort of orange, powdery mold-like aggregate on the surfaces.  I cleaned the unit top to bottom – it would have had to be done anyway, considering when I figure that I have everything set up I’ll be doing a house blessing.  That procedure begins with cleaning everything in the place.  Why not start with the fridge?

As I turned on the computer today, mindful of the fact that I don’t know how much my average power bill will wind up being, I made sure to only have enough plugged up to be useful at the moment.  That means that my cell phone and Treo are both charging right now, and the only other appliance drawing on the power right now is the tiny television sitting in front of my air mattress.  I’m running my laptop on battery right now.  Any bit of cash that I can save on anything is a good thing.

Speaking of bits of cash, I checked out the place, and found that it is not cable ready.  Getting an internet connection on site would require either that dreaded dial-up connection – a bad idea now that I actually use things that require speed, like video-sharing and streaming radio – or DSL.  I’ll be researching DSL, but…as I write this right now, the “Internet is Available” button has begun flashing on my computer.  Somewhere in the building is at least one unsecured connection….the signal is incredibly weak, but it’s there.

I really don’t know if I want to take my chances on it…but apparently the system beat me to it, as the Windows Update has just popped up, and apparently has grabbed an update for itself without my knowledge.  It’s either that or it was there yesterday and has not finished loading into the machine.  Either way it might be time to go ahead and download Avast again.
