Just a few thoughts on the muses. I tend to do things like this relatively often, finding a subject that refuses to leave me alone and then having to stop and theorize on it. So, here it is.

Sometimes, it is a good thing when the muses decide to rear their heads and offer some ideas. It is often looked on with great welcome, and not with a barely-restrained cry of "AAUGH!"

If you couldn’t tell already, this is one of the latter.

The muses…though there are a lot of people who tend to view the muses as only ‘psychological constructs’ and the like, I am not one of them. The muses are very real, and their power of pwning is absolute. They do not take ‘no’ for an answer, but rarely do they take a simple ‘yes’ for an answer either.

The muses are often helpful in finding ideas for things, and also in finding new ways in expressing an idea that may have been done before. What most people don’t seem to remember is that the muses do go off on their own at times, and as a result, they work on different schedules than we do. This discrepancy tends to pop up in the times that they turn up and in the methods that they choose.

To use an example of what happened to me just recently, I am currently working on a fic, which is rather dark, and at one point, I was at a loss for where to take it, and the muses – ha! Remember, people, the muses tend to work on their own schedules. I don’t care who your muses tend to take the form of (more on that theory later), they work on their own schedules and then they work YOU into said schedules. The muses are what we would call ‘pimps,’ and you, my dear friend, are their little – erm, let’s say ‘toy.’ But I’m off subject (whee!) so let’s get back on track, shall we? Now, these muses decided to give me an idea, but not in the usual form – which usually tends to be in the middle of algebra class or something. Nope, they decided to come at me when I’m at my most vulnerable and most receptive: dreamscape.

I took a different path recently with dreamscape work, choosing to only use the minimal psychic shield, and loosed control as I slept. What I wasn’t counting on was for the muses to pop in and sew their little idea-seeds in my head. During that dream, I saw little snippets that eventually worked their way into the fic as what I now call ‘the spectre scene,’ only they decided not to use Vinnie-kun as a target. Somehow, I had been in that position, and therefore I was at the mercy of the spectre.

When I woke, I didn’t remember all of it. But then I began writing, and the words almost melted from my mind onto the page. Every bit of it, in excruciatingly graphic detail. Now, that doesn’t sound too bad, but put yourself in my shoes, and well, meh.

The point that I’m trying to make here is that the muses choose what is commonly referred to as the path of least resistance. If your muses don’t seem to be active, you’ve got ask yourself if you really want their input. For, you see, they are the masters of this plan, and you are just their little toy, to play with and have fun with.

Of course, with me it’s more like they’re pimps, and I’m their little bitch. But sometimes, I don’t mind. It’s when they get rabid that bugs me. I mean, come on, five ideas in my head at once is a little much, ne? But you can’t ignore them. They don’t go away. THEY DON’T QUIT. They are the Borg, and resistance is futile.

Oh, and before I forget, I will have this deadly little fic up in here soon enough, just as soon as I hear from my other two betas. *nod nod*
