The kicker is, my answer to this one is kind of pathetic. It was a foregone conclusion: that Kain, Yuna, Tifa, Laguna, Vaan, and Lightning would not be making it to the other side of this fight. Their journey would end at the Rift, where they would fight to destroy the source of the endless horde of manikins.
Knowing it is one thing.
Seeing it is another.
As I said earlier, knowing it’s coming is one thing.
Actually seeing it is another.
After all of those fights that led up to actually being able to get to the Rift, seeing them come out of it was the one thing that cemented the fact that no, they were not coming back.
Then we watch them go down, one by one. Last to drop is Lightning, looking like she could keep going except she forgets what ‘up’ means and drops.
Then we cut to Cosmos’s throne, which is being assaulted by the horde that had gotten past the others (who are now DEAD mind you) and the Warrior of Light, fighting off a horde no smaller than the one that took down Team Canon Fodder a while back—except he’s soloing this bunch.
Except he starts to go down.
Cosmos shouts his name (which we don’t get to hear) and he manages to stand back up.
But, he can’t keep fighting. He goes down again.
That’s when Cosmos decides she’s had it. She rises from her throne—and I do mean rises, she stands up and then she rises into the air, glowing with power—gives the manikins this icy stare—
He shouts, “Cosmos!”
And everything vanishes.
Cut to the Warrior of Light, battered and bruised but still alive—and he sees the others around him, ‘sleeping’ in Kain’s Undisclosed Location—and he sees the other others, who didn’t survive the Bolivian Army Massacree.
Shinryu is already stirring, spiraling upwards to purify the group—which includes an unconscious Cosmos—while WoL looks on in obvious confusion and more than a little shock as the six who flat in the air, outside of the range of Shinryu’s purifying light, start fading away.
And the last thing he sees before he loses consciousness himself is Lightning, smiling at him—now here I made a ‘WHAT IS THIS I DON’T EVEN’ face, because it was Lightning smiling—and she nods, as if to say, “You’re in charge of this now. Don’t screw it up.”
And then they’re gone.
Much later, the Warrior of Light wakes up in the Sanctuary.
He doesn’t remember any of this.
Not the fight. Not the lost comrades. Not Kain, who was the spear to his shield. Not Lightning, who for the most part acted as his second-in-command whether she was aware of it or not.
…Even his name is gone.
When all of this hit me, there was really only one thing I could say: “DICK MOVE.”
…well that was AFTER I got past the squeaky thing that passed for ‘awwww’ and ‘oh god’ at the time…

Date: 2011-06-22 06:55 am (UTC)That whole scene was so engrossing, coupled with that flare of music when Cosmos lunges and it all becomes a moment of stirring "NO WAI!"
I was pretty gutted when I realised the implications for Lightning and co - I mean, whilst I understand why S-E had to do it, did they REALLY have to DO IT?!
(ToT) ... BRB sniffling forever for everyone.

And yet the cycle still end with her and her forces defeated and subsequently purified. They live to fight another day, but the cost…

Addressing a Plothole
Date: 2011-06-22 01:28 pm (UTC)You know what, I'll just go with the fact that since everything's going to hell in 014, naturally that rule went to hell as well.
Trying to fill the plothole
Date: 2011-06-22 03:55 pm (UTC)Also during 013 after Cosmos' death a lot of memories begin leaking out like Sephiroth's memories of his suicide which he should not have as part of the rules with him dying in the last cycle. Even though Shinryu was supposed to have EATEN said memories. Proof that nothing is gone for good in Dissidia and that dragons are bulimic.
I need to do a bit more working out here and there but I'm pretty sure this is what happened. I can try finding citations if needed.
Um, yeah...ramble over.

Date: 2011-06-22 11:27 pm (UTC)No lie. I seriously just thought that.
I WILL ACCEPT THIS PAYMENT HOWEVER BECAUSE HE IS A MAN IN A KILT. A VERY—ER, BIG MAN IN A KILT.
I actually came up with a theory on that one
Date: 2011-06-22 11:03 pm (UTC)When they got yanked out of the cycle, they immediately head back to unfinished business. With no memories of this stuff, of course.
AND HERE US CREATORS GO PLUCKING THEM RIGHT BACK OUT AND PUTTING THEM RIGHT BACK IN.
We're evil. >=D

"Hey, where the hell are we? ...and who's that lady?"
Time for my depressed Kuja icon
Date: 2011-06-22 04:06 pm (UTC)For all the clunkiness and fail that went into 012 there was a lot of win and beauty about it too. It should've been a two UMD game IMO so we could've drawn out everything that needed to be seen. But this cutscene was such a magnificent player punch.
This coming from the person who coined Team Canon Fodder.
I knew S-E was gonna do it and I was expecting them to do it and make it HURT. They did not dissapoint on that front. I just wish we could've got the same level of dedication with all the 013 heroes and their deaths. I still think Zidane's was the saddest when you take everything into context (TWO betrayals in one day! TWO! One of which involved the mexican stomping dance on his heart complete with a spit in the face) but I really wanted to be shown not told. Also WHERE THE FUCK WAS SEPHIROTH'S SUICIDE, SQUARE ENIX!? D
...FUCK YEAH WHERE WAS IT?!
Date: 2011-06-22 11:09 pm (UTC)You have no idea how hard it was for me to avoid spoilers for this game—I blocked YouTube with a clunky-ass password that in all reality "r3a77y_l00ked_4umphinliekdis" (really looked something like this) so I wouldn't be tempted to look at spoilers (when you have to look up a password like that every time, it REALLY puts the kibosh on the drive to spoil oneself).
So indeed my first reaction to that whole bit was "Ohh, FUCK."
And WE DID GET PROMISED A SUICIDE DIDN'T WE? WHERE WAS IT?!
…unless of course this is what they're going to use to bait us for the next game…in which case Square Enix is a bunch of geniuses…
