DDFF Meme: Day 36: Most nostalgic moment?

For me, this is something of a retcon. When I first played the game:
- I hadn’t played FFI yet.
- I hadn’t played FFII yet either.
- I hadn’t finished FFIII. Still haven’t actually. I WILL get the ultimate magics first, damn it.
- I hadn’t finished FFIV. Still haven’t. I can’t sit through the first translation.
- I was a boss-fight off from clearing FFV. *Yeah, stalling*
- I hadn’t played much of FFVIII.
- I hadn’t played FFIX. Still haven’t. Any day now…dammit broken phone!
- I’ve only backseat!gamed FFXI, but I know enough about it to pas.
- Hadn’t played much into FFXII.
- Know nothing about FFXIII.
…I’m not a slacker. I’m just broke.
That brought my total workable field to a grand total of five titles. Which, in most series standards, is no small feat, but in Final Fantasy standards (Consider that I knew how to play Final Fantasy Mystic Quest before I knew how to tie my shoes…then again it took me until age 6 to get that down) that’s kind of a slacker!situation.
Nonetheless, the first bit of nostalgia hit when Bartz found his first summonstone in the first game…
Bartz: Sweet Cosmos! It’s a talking rock!
Obviously this is reference to:
Bartz: Sweet Christmas! It’s a talking turtle!
Which of course loops around on itself occasionally when you’re playing as Exdeath and pull off his Ex Burst:
Exdeath: TURTLE!!!
…yeah, it got silly. That’s partially why I wanted Bartz’s Hypothetical Secret EX Burst QuoteTM to be “Sweet Christmas!” Of course it would be said in a triumphant tone here.
The second one was kind of a backdoor nostalgia moment. Finishing the first game, and seeing the Warrior of Light walking to Cornelia, was actually the thing that spurred me to buy FFI and play it.
…it also spurred me to write a certain fic series, but that’s neither here nor there.
At any rate, I played that first game, got to see at last for myself the majestic Garland who only knocked my thief Biggs down. It went fast…or would have had I not spent so much time in the optional dungeons, and soon I finished the game.
I then beat Dissidia a second time. I realize I could have viewed the ending in the museum, but I kind of liked the dialogue that pops up during the slaying of the final ten manikins.
This time, when seeing the Warrior of Light walk off, I remembered the intro to FFI:
The world lies shrouded in darkness.
The winds die... The seas rage... The earth decays...
But the people believe in a prophecy, patiently awaiting its fulfillment.
“When darkness veils the world, four Warriors of Light shall come...”
After a long journey, four young travelers did at last appear...
...and in the hand of each was clutched a crystal.
It finally hit me that the last bit of our Dissidia Ending…was the beginning of the very first Final Fantasy. I watched the credits roll with a sense of satisfaction. It had all come full circle.
Shhh, I'm supposed to be sleeping! (Woke up early and have to wait for 3 hours till the kids are up!
Date: 2011-07-22 03:35 am (UTC)I wept like a baby the first time I played 013's ending - I haven't even crossed the bridge to Pravoka because I can't bear to leave that beautiful theme behind - and my god... the fact that you, the 'Great Will' had made it possible for WoL to begin the adventure THAT STARTED THE SERIES, making YOU, the player, responsible for every FF was perhaps the best thank you Square Enix has ever given us. They didn't even need to put it into words, that moment said it all for them. (I just wished they hadn't changed the ending themes between games, I prefer the original's ending...)
Let's see... (there was so much potential for FFIX but unfortunately hardly anyone on the dev team played it...)
+ Zidane's line 'Do I need a reason to help someone?'. At first I thought this was in reference to the waiting screens we get before loading the game until I found the lifestream.net's translation of the Dissidia Ultimania. One of the things they mentioned in their 'allusions to the original' section was that this was what Zidane says to Kuja when he goes to save him at the end. (The english line was changed to 'wouldn't you do the same for me If I was dying?') So the entire scene between them at Shade Impulse was a nod to that and then of course with 012 it actually became an even more beautiful moment because it showed that there was hope for their relationship and for Kuja as a person.
...Also it sounds gorgeous in japanese:
(The poem Kuj recites at the beginning is another allusion; it's what he recites before attempting to capture Alexander and when everything starts to go tits up for him.)
I'm just annoyed that his childish taunt of 'Baka~!' was only a museum extra and that in the english version it was translated as a haughty 'Imbecile'. Dude, he's supposed to say 'Moron~!', it's one of his favourite insults and he's supposed to say it like some cocky third grader! >:T
Can't think of any others immeadiately...will need to stew my brain for a bit. *gets back to playing japanese!Tifa*
DAMMIT THE DLC GODS NEED TO QUIT SCREWING YOU
Date: 2011-07-22 04:54 am (UTC)Dissidia: The entire game is a Crowning Moment of Awesome. Said CMOA, with us responsible for the very beginning of it all, acutally leaves me with a question.
AND DID YOU NOTICE HOW FRICKEN SERENE HE LOOKS IN THAT ENDING? I MEAN WOW.His crystal.
When he returns to the normal world, is there any remnant of Cosmos's power in it?
And what about the comrades he will meet? Have they been involved in this as well? Are they just coming back from their own trials? The Sage Lukahn hints at such a past/present/future—BAH, let's call that bit a big timey-wimey ball and be done with it, shall we?
…OMG I've veered into Wild Mass Guessing. Never Mind me. XD
-------
He says "Baka?" What is he six?! xD
I AM SLOWLY COMING TO HATE DLC. BUT...IF I GIVE IN NOW THEN WHAT WILL MY SUFFERING HAVE BEEN FOR!?
Date: 2011-07-22 05:05 am (UTC)OMG HE CAN HAZ SMILE!? NO WONDER THE GAME ENDED!I need to at some point do an analysis on how FFIX is the spiritual ancestor of Dissidia due to being the original mythology gag nostalgic high CMOA FF game, just without the conflict of the gods or the characters from other FFs appearing. Because those two games have way too many similarities. It does not help that it is suprisingly easy to mistake WoL for Kuja and vice versa. (WoL!Kuja has appeared in fan art every so often - it looks far too masculine to be Kuja but based on the situation it's presumably not WoL. If they weren't both artificial lifeforms I'd be requesting a DNA test right about now)
It's weird that the 6 year old girl in FFIX is more mature than the 24 year old
manladyboy. But that's one of the reasons I love him. (Also it fits with the idea that he can't emotionally mature due to being built as an adult - turns out Garland's theory was wrong but Kuja just never got the chance to develop) He is one giant brat in FFIX. DADDY DOESN'T LOVE HIIIIIMMMM!!!PLEASE DON'T HATE THE DLC, IT WILL SOON BRING GREAT GLORY FOR THEE.
Date: 2011-07-22 05:19 am (UTC)I would read that analysis even if it spoiled me even further. I'm probably going to wind up revisiting my one entry in which I almost vinidicated Cosmos, because things I missed are coming to light (HAHAHA I'M SO TIRED THAT PHRASE SOMEHOW SEEMS FILTHY) and so we could geek out together!
And hey, if I get heatstruck and crazy I could read it for a recording in my best impression of Shantotto. If.
…funny word. If. IF. if.
WHY YES I AM ALREADY MILDLY HEATSICK.
Hey, a change of pace! Usually it's Mommy Issues! XD
He gets that lovely serene look in 013's ending and when you clear 000 YOU ACTUALLY SEE HIM SMILE. I keep rewatching it and staring at him.…I'm getting to bed now, but on a completely unrelated note that is relevant to the interests of all, I just got a mental image of
SiegfriedWoL in the porn chair…You're welcome XD
