Well, hell, don’t ask me this question if you don’t expect me to be nerdy! I will warn you now that my answer will be quite wordy.
I change assists like I change socks—in other words, enough that no one’s running the same rotation for more than 48 hours. When I change equipment, I change assists. When I change builds, I change assists. When I plan for different types of runs (like the HURRY UP I NEED MEGALIXERS build I’ve gotten set up with Mateus) I change assists.
Depending on who I’m facing—and therefore whose head I have to mess with—I change assists.
Depending on my moveset, I change assists.
Depending on my crack-pairing mood at the time, I change assists.
Depending on the pattern the AI’s picked up (in the Labyrinth that is) I change assists.
I’m like Lady Gaga when it comes to assists—you NEVER know what to expect, even when you think you have an idea.
Now that that’s been said, I do have a few favorite assist combinations.
BTW: Feel free to steal combinations. I’ll be listing my favorite assists in general afterward in a second part.
*If you’d like me to test more combinations, let me know!
Surprisingly, not all of them are shippy. Most of them are practical arrangements.
Fave combo: Mateus with Siegfried WoL
Actually, let me say this first before I extoll the virtue (vice?) of this team: Mateus, thanks to his playstyle, is uniquely suited for assist!abuse builds. The constant laying of traps ensures that his Assist Gauge doesn’t have the time to deplete. Further rendering this combination broken is the fact that his signature weapons increase EX Intake range—he gets the best of both situations.
Mateus’s traps are largely stationary. With a few placed, there’s almost a guarantee that WoL connecting with an aerial assist strike will knock your foe into at least one of them (most commonly a stationary Flare)—if you’re exceptionally good or exceptionally lucky, the bastard will ping-pong off of several. There’s something deliciously satisfying about that. He also runs good interference when you’re working on casting a Starfall.
Is it shippy? …Not unless there’s mind control involved. Purely a practical match-up.
Close Second: Terra with Kuja
I will admit—I put these two together just to be shippy the first time. Then I watched them in action.
This pair manages mid-to-long range combat with grace and aplomb; Terra’s surprising damage output with Kuja’s multi-hit combinations puts up a series of really big numbers in a very short amount of time. What’s further, when Kuja’s combos hit, it gives Terra ample time to drop Graviga—quite possibly her most over-powered spell, capable of a three-digit crit at level 19. Normally at that level you’re still working your ass off for two-digit hits over 70, but this combination, properly executed, can pull down a 239 damage crit at level 19.
The kicker? If Kuja’s combos hit, it counts as a hit during Holy Combo. Even if you don’t land your initial Holy, Kuja’s combos—probably because they start with a variety of Holy as well—will allow you to continue the chain into Flare and Ultima.
Is it shippy? Hell, I’m tempted to call them Mama and Papa Ultima after watching them in action. It’s easily the most graceful fight you can manage in Dissidia.
Up Next: Kuja with Jecht
Beefcake, meet bishie.
Kuja’s attacks require some plotting, and in the case of Seraphic Star and Force Symphony, a little bit of precision. Enter Jecht, the greatest Blitzer there is—at least he says so. Almost all of Jecht’s attacks tend to send the opponent straight into either the ground, or straight into the wall.
Normally this would present a problem. That is, until you remember that, here in Duodecim, there’s no wallcrash-induced invincibility frames to worry about. Your foe is just a poor bastard (possibly with a sexy pose working) stuck against a wall. And that’s when you shoot. =D Ultima? Don’t mind if I do.
Is it shippy? I’m a Kujecht/Jechtja fan, so yeah XD
Joining the Fray: Kain with Sephiroth
A strange combination, yes. Big men with big weapons, this combination is about finesse. Kain’s lance and Sephiroth’s sword can set up some devastating combinations. Problem is, unless you’ve been a Kain mainer (GHK. CAN’T STOP RHYMING) for quite some time, it is damn hard to land his HP attacks. That’s where Sephiroth comes in.
Sephiroth’s assist BRV attacks land a lot of hits in a short span of time—and trigger the Assist Chase. Timing it right, you can port in close enough to land an easy Gungnir. If you’re exceptionally high up, you can go big and try for a Sky Rave instead—but that’s far less likely to hit. Even Rising Drive is more likely to hit, but it’s best to start that combination on the ground—you want as much space between you and the ceiling as possible
Is it shippy? Uh…only if you have dark!Kain handy.
*still high off her first go Feral Chaos victory*
Date: 2011-07-08 12:56 am (UTC)I will never allow Feral Chaos to have Kuja as his assist regardless of how magnificent Thongboy's help is. Because Kuja made that thing his BITCH. Feral Chaos serves him, not the other way around.
Most of these choices Ultimania agrees with, so you've got quite the strategical knack there. (I often disagree with what Ultimania says based on fangirlisness. Kuja will have his little brother helping him out regardless of how terrible Zidane's attacks are. Nah uh, I ain't following the tome of wisdom at all, no siree)
And now I need to try Terra's graviga out... (Fun fact: I already had Kuja as her assist. Primarily because of Ultimania but now... I do love Team Fluffy)
Strategist? Nah, I just got too much time on my hands. XD
Date: 2011-07-08 01:22 am (UTC)I haven't tried to seriously use Feral Chaos yet, but…I've been using Quick Arcade for lazy!Diamond Studs, and I tend to wind up with him a lot. He's oddly satisfying. Big hits, no mercy.
I'm wondering just how much Ultimania says that I can agree with Mind a list?
Also, I'm working on finding my cable so I can upload one of my Kujerra fights. They make Garland into confetti together. =D
Sort of...
Date: 2011-07-08 01:29 am (UTC)Yeah...Also I like how tiny my foes seem by comparison. Smacking them against the wall makes me feel somewhat powerful.
Hard to say. I disagree with bits of it here and there simply for the odd Dissidia politics that go on in my head. Such as Sephiroth being Kuja's assist. Yeah, I can never see Sephiroth eagerly wanting to assist Kuja, even if it is relevant to his interests. Also Sephiroth is Zidane's best assist. Wh..Why does a one winged angel work best for angels of death I ask you!?
Daaaaaaawwww... That'll teach Garland to oppose their marriage. Even if this Garland isn't Kuja's daddy... He just annoys Thongboy and so that's reason enough.
At least it isn't the Holy Grail soundtrack?
Date: 2011-07-08 01:34 am (UTC)Speaking of…I WOULD LESS THAN THREE YOU IF YOU SHOWED ME HOW TO DO ANNOTATIONS.
Actually I love Python music...
Date: 2011-07-08 01:51 am (UTC)It's so easy. You just go to my video and select edit on the one you wish to fiddle about with. One of the settings available (third from the left) is annotations. Play through the video and click the add annotation option when there's a moment you want one to pop up. Type in whatever it is you want to see and choose the timing accordingly (usually they last for 5 seconds but by studying the timeline you can get an idea of when the best moments for the beginning and end of each one is) then when you're done with that particular one just click Publish or the video itself and it will be there. You can also edit existing annotations in the same place. It's always an idea to play them through several times to make sure the cues are right and you don't have any speechbubbles or textboxes hovering around for 50 seconds by mistake. When you're done just select publish again and the vid is altered. Simple as that.
Me too—it's why I don't mind "Always Look On The Bright Side of Life" stuck in my head
Date: 2011-07-08 12:10 pm (UTC)Well, it does make a litte sense--he hangs them up in one place while you pummel them mercilessly with crap. The politics of him teaming with 'Mecia, though just hits me wrong.
Not that it'd stop me, though. I did team Kain with Seph after all. XD
Wat? It's that simple?
Guess I better write fic and get to annotating this video then!
I'm so glad I got to see the London previews of Spamalot. Tim Curry was a riot
Date: 2011-07-08 04:53 pm (UTC)Fwahahahaha! I make Kuja assist Prishe, Kain, Ulty, Tidus and CoD because it's what Ultimania says works best for 'em. The politics don't enter into it. For Jecht, Cloud, Terra and Kefka though it's a different matter entirely. (I ship Kefja mostly out of crack but also cause I'm 90% sure Kefka wanted to pull that tail. One sided of course. Although in 013 my head crack canon assumes that Kefka tried to dupe Kujie-coo into thinking that Kefka was his boyfriend. They broke up after the crystal incident)
Yep. So simple even a monkeboy can do it!
I should really be drawing right now...
